Media briefing on the "Understanding China" Conference held in Beijing

    CYOL Beijing, October 19 (The China Youth Daily, by online reporters Cui Li, Wang Jingshuo and Li Chenhe) The media briefing on the "Understanding China" Conference was held in Beijing this afternoon, attracting a large number of Chinese and foreign reporters to the scene, which, in Wu Jianmin’s words, was a hotspot both at home and abroad.

    The Conference will be convened at the YanqiLake International Conference Center in Beijing on November 1-3. Foreign delegates to be present include 15 former presidents / PMs and 20 academic leaders.

    According to Wu, The Conference features good timing, good platform and good content. It follows the convening of the Fifth Plenary Session of 18th CPC Central Committee, drawing attention from both China and the world while channeling exchange of views on the 13th Five-year Plan. China's growth needs the world, and the world cannot prosper without China.

    Wu says China is misunderstood for three reasons

    According to Wu, temporary misunderstandings of China results from three causes: First, the CPC’s leadership and the creativity of the Chinese people are underestimated. Next, there are ideological prejudices over China. Third, China has been closed to the outside world, resulting in the lack of communication. He says that face-to-face communication is due to endow the outside world with a better understanding of China.

    Wu mainly expects this conference to deepen the world's understanding of China. Since the global economic demand is feeble, as an economy contributing nearly 30 percent of the global GDP last year, China will continue to play a vital role in the world regarding its 13th Five-year Plan. Deepening mutual understanding between China and the world will be conducive to the economic growth, stability and prosperity of the world.

    "Understanding China" has an implied meaning of inadequate understanding. Since the beginning of reform and opening up, the outside world has been questioning China's economic development, with some even claiming the Chinese economy to "hit a brick wall" or "set for a hard landing." Misreading China undermines the interests of the world and China as well. So, it is meaningful to learn more about China for both sides.

    According to Wu, the conference will release signs of deepening the reform to establish a new market economy system. China is further deepening its reform and opening up, and the Chinese economy is at the turning point. With increased outbound investment, the mindset must change accordingly.

    In an exclusive interview conducted by CYD/CYOL reporters, Wu states that China will usher in a new economy era with higher-level opening up. Last year China's outbound investment recorded 140 billion yuan. Wu describes enterprises as the main players going global economically.

    The peaceful rise of China means that we will never pursue hegemony, expansion or alignment, avoiding the mistakes made by colonial powers in the past. Instead, we will seek peace, development and cooperation.
