The research project themed "Understanding China" is a vital outreach of its namesake international conference, which was initiated by the CIIDS in conjunction with the world-renowned think tank 21st Century Council in 2013. The CIIDS succeeded in hosting the first and second “Understanding China” International Conference in November 2013 and November 2015 respectively, attended by a dozen of former G20 presidents and premiers and a score of influential figures in international business, science and media circles. General Secretary Xi Jinping personally met all the foreign guests twice and delivered an important speech at each session, recognizing the conference as "a bridge and platform for communication." He also instructed that "understanding is a two-way process of communication, and we should take the initiative to tell well stories about China."
In order to internalize the instructions and seek more in-depth findings based on the success of the conference, the CIIDS in conjunction with the 21st Century Council invited celebrities at home and abroad to carry out thematic studies on this epic theme of “Understanding China”, a country that needs to be interpreted through books, videos and multimedia, etc., from every perspective and multiple dimensions to display its profound historical changes and great rejuvenation, in an effort to answer the fundamental historical proposition of "Where did we come from? Where are we going?" which will then be released to the international community. Tell Chinese stories well and clearly, and make “Understanding China” a channel for China to communicate with the world.
At the seminar, the participants were engaged in lively dialogue and discussion on issues such as how to carry out the research and strengthen the publicity and promotion of the project, with their views fully exchanged and a series of consensus reached on follow-up tasks.
